What Is How To Be Your Own Bodyguard About?

Professional protection agents use the techniques included in “How To Be Your Own Bodyguard” to keep their clients safe in hostile environments. Unlike Hollywood, real bodyguards don’t spend their lives running roadblocks, shooting it out with would-be assassins, and getting into fistfights with everyone.  The job is about two things, and they are awareness and avoidance.  Awareness of how bad guys operate and how to avoid any attempts they might make on the client.
The first part of the book covers a slew of information about how bad guys pick victims, how to lower your profile, the combative mindset, and the effects of Adrenalin on your system.  The next section is about soft skills and the tips and tricks that cover being on foot in airports, hotel security, vehicular safety, and so on. While the author is saving fighting techniques or “hard skills” for future editions, he has added a section on helping you choose which martial art to study.

Who Wrote It?

You can read more about him under the author section, but for a quick bio, Nick Hughes is a former Close Protection Agent who worked all around the world after leaving the French Foreign Legion, where he served in both the parachute regiment as a recon diver, a commando and a military police officer.
He has extensive martial arts training and real-time experience working as both a bouncer and an MP in the Legion, so unlike many instructors who simply regurgitate theory, he’s actually talking about what he knows works.

Why Another Self-defense Book?

Simple answer. Because almost all of them start with the victim being attacked. In reality, there is a slew of stuff going on before the assault, and if readers could be taught what that is and how to recognize it, the attack phase could be avoided. His bodyguard training reinforced this concept because the bulk of the training was devoted to avoiding conflict and not shooting your way out of it. Professionals call this avoidance and awareness “soft skills.”
So, what is going on before the attack? It begins with the selection of a victim. (And that could also be a car to jack or a particular house to break into.) Why do the bad guys target one person and ignore another? Can you do anything that will lessen your chances of being chosen?
Next is the isolation of the victim.  Criminals don’t like witnesses. How about some counter-surveillance and situational awareness training when you’re away from the safety of numbers?
The penultimate step in the process is the patter the bad guy will use to get close enough to launch his attack. It’s also learning to defuse, where possible, stuff that’s being said. Remember, if something can be said to make the situation worse, something can also be said to make it better.

Is It Any Good?

In 2018 we were nominated for Book of the Year at the UK Martial Arts Awards Show and got 2nd place.

And, in 2019, we hit Number 1 Best Seller status on Amazon. I’m happy to say this was without any of the hacks that cheats use to obtain number one.
