How Safe is Your Home?

Below you’ll find a home security checklist to ensure your home is as secure as possible.  This is very similar to what the author used when doing a security analysis of a client’s home. Feel free to print it off and go through your residence and check off what’s been done or what needs to be done.  To get a top score you should be able to check at least 30 of the following items.

Home Security Checklist

Are you aware of the crime statistics of your neighborhood and sub-division?
Do you have a neighborhood watch? Are you concerned enough to be part of it?
Your neighbors. Do you know them?
Motion detector lights? Do you have them around the house?
Have you trimmed back any shrubbery that a criminal could hide in?
Are your locks good quality?
Have your doors been upgraded?
Is there a peep-hole in your door?
Have you got deadbolts and do you use them?
Is there an alarm system at home and is it monitored?
Are there several panic buttons strategically located in the house?
Do you have a dog at home? Does he live inside? (2 points) Outside (1 point)
Has your dog received any special training?
Do you have a list of emergency numbers programmed in your phone?
Is the same list in the safe room?
Do you have a safe room?
If yes, do you have it properly stocked?
Does everyone at home know where your nearest hospital is?
How about the police station? Do you know where the nearest one is?
Do you have their direct line?
Are they open after-hours?
Have you looked at your house as a criminal would and figured out the weak spots?
Do you have a good fence?
Are your doors solid?
Do you have smoke detectors and do you have a schedule to check their batteries?
Do you have carbon monoxide detectors and do you regularly check their batteries?
Does your home look lived in when you’re away on vacation/business?
Have you bought timers to turn lights on and off to create the illusion of occupancy?
Is your garage as secure as the other entry points?
Is the attic alarmed or is it a weak point?
Are your tools locked away so criminals don’t have access to them?
Do you have a good first aid kit?
Do you know how to use your first aid kit and have you checked the contents lately?
Have you practiced a fire drill for your house with your kids like they do at school?
Have you practiced gathering up the family members and getting to the safe room?
Do you have a rendezvous point outside your home in the event of a house fire?
What about a rendezvous point away from home in the event of a disaster?
Do you know where the flashlights/candles are in the event of a power outage?
Have you checked the flashlights to make sure the batteries are fully charged?
If you live in a 2 story home or higher do you have a fire ladder on the upper floors?

HOME SECURITY CHECKLIST FOR THOSE WHO OWN WEAPONS FOR HOME DEFENSE

Have you got a practical, functioning personal defense weapon near your bed?
Do you practice with it on a regular basis?
Does it have an additional light or do you have a flashlight to use with it?
Do you know your arcs of fire? (most homes are made of sheetrock which will NOT stop rounds)
Is it secure from children or visitors in your house?
