Selection, Isolation, Verbal, Attack & The Dangers of Being Isolated.

Great Example

Here’s a perfect example of leaving the safety of numbers and the dangers of being isolated. Anyone who’s read How To Be Your Own Bodyguard knows about S.I.V.A. the acronym I use to break down how most crime transpires. It begins with the Selection of the victim (or property), Isolating them from the safety of numbers, using Verbal patter to distract them, and then the Attack. This came to me yesterday via Facebook from friends in Australia. It’s a clip from the police of a man they’re seeking in connection with the robbery of a 74-year-old man in a shopping center.

Predators

Just like their wild animal counterparts, human predators operate in much the same way. Wild animals go to the watering hole because it’s a target-rich environment. Then they spook the herd which runs and very soon, the very young, the very old, the physically lame get separated from their stronger pack members at which point they’re vulnerable and usually killed. Nature’s perfect example illustrates the dangers of being alone. In the clip that follows the predator has gone to a shopping center (target-rich environment) and waited till an older member of the tribe (less likely to mount any kind of effective defense) left the safety of the herd to go to the bathroom.

Possible Defenses

What could he have done differently knowing he was being isolated? There are three possible solutions here. I won’t go into any real depth on them here as they’re probably topics for future blog entries.

1. Gone to the bathroom with someone else: There’s safety in numbers.

2. Learned how to fight: I’m aware he’s 74 but there are plenty of stories of old fighters sorting out youngsters.

3. Armed himself: I know, it’s not a viable option in Australia where they’ve taken the right to bear arms away from the civilian populace. Not sure what they expect the answer is for the oldies when they are attacked by younger healthier specimens. Still, as I said, definitely a topic for another day. (I can only imagine if that was here and the old guy in question was Claude Werner.)

At least he wasn’t seriously hurt or killed during the attack which is something we can all be thankful for.
